THIS HAPPENS WHEN:
The body’s “one-way valve” a.k.a the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) between the stomach and the esophagus doesn't work properly. Let's just say - it forgot to do its job..
It's the same muscle that opens a little when you burp or have the hiccups.
If it becomes weak or relaxes at the wrong time, it doesn't SEAL properly - therefore acid escapes upwards, irritating the esophagus causing heartburn.
TIPS TO REDUCE ACID REFLUX:
EATING HABITS:
1. Eat Smaller, Frequent Meals.
2. Take your time - Enjoy your meal for 20-minutes.
3. Avoid lying down for 2-3 hours after eating.
FOOD CHOICES:
1. Limit Spicy food, fried foods, caffeine, and carbonated drinks.
2. Balanced meals with protein, and high fibre foods!
LIFESTYLE CHANGES:
1. Maintain a healthy weight (reduces abdominal pressure).
2. Wear looser clothing around the stomach.
3. Avoid smoking and limit alcohol intake.
TIMING MATTERS:
1. Avoid late-night snacking/eating.
2. Dinner a little lighter than lunch.
